Oberpionier - Senior Assault Engineer
The rank of Oberpionier and its specific unit type equivalents (Oberschütze, Obergrenadier, etc.) was created to give recognition and rank promotion to those enlisted soldiers who had achieved or displayed an above-average aptitude and proficiency but would not, however, qualify for promotion to the Gefreiter or Sturmann rank. A consideration for promotion to the rank of Oberpionier could usually be achieved after six months to one year of military service. The rank was identified by a cloth star (sometimes called a pip) worn on the upper left sleeve, the collar tabs remained plain like the SS-Pionier. In the militaries of other nations, Oberpionier was considered the equivalent of a Private First Class.
